Today in 1977, Star Wars was first released! In honor of this auspicious day, I wanted to find a Star Wars character of whom I had not yet made an egg. Our answer comes in the form of Jek “Red 6” Porkins, also known as the first casualty on the Death Star run. You may also remember him as Major Eaton from Raiders of the Lost Ark. He was the guy who said “Top. Men.”
Today in 1934, Bonnie and Clyde were gunned down by police. I have a fondness for the pair because in third grade, I did my Women’s History report on Bonnie Parker. I remember typing the report on an actual typewriter, as this was before my family had a computer. In addition to the typed report, I included a crude drawing of Bonnie Parker firing a comically large gun and murdering someone. This was straight out of my imagination and could not have possibly served to educate anyone.
The plight of screwed-over Motown artists frightens me. Here are these terribly talented folks who finally break into the industry, a feat that cannot be easy to achieve in the first place, and their talent and work ethic isn’t enough to navigate the Machiavellian snake pit that is the record industry. I’m not going to say that I relate on the same level as these singers, but their stories certainly terrify me as a comic-book artist.
