A salute to Jayne Mansfield, who today in 1967 died in a car crash. Why did she spell her name with a “Y”? We’ll never know. Or rather I will never know, because this is probably the last time I will address the matter.

Today is an auspicious day for bad-word aficionados such as myself! It was today in 1939 that Gone with the Wind premiered, blowing people’s minds with the word “damn”. If not for that goddamned Hayes Code, it would have been “Eat shit, my dear”.

I was surprised to find that Eppie Lederer did not start the famous advice column, but rather a woman named Ruth Crowley did. I did know, however, that Lederer’s twin sister, Pauline, was Dear Abby. Back to things I didn’t know, their columns competed and the two twin-sister-writers were not on speaking terms at times. I did know that both ladies were human.

Never having seen Zardoz, I can only guess that it was a smash hit. Who wouldn’t want to see Sean Connery in a diaper again? I say again because he wore hot pants for a good part of Thunderball.

King John signed the Magna Carta today in 1215. I’m sure he was not thrilled about it, but life’s all about compromise.
